Grapes: 100% Pinot Noir
Few estates are as closely associated with Volnay as Domaine Marquis d’Angerville. Under Guillaume d’Angerville, the family continues to produce some of Burgundy’s most admired Pinot Noirs, with a particular talent for finding elegance without sacrificing depth or character. Champans is one of the domaine’s most important Premier Cru holdings, a vineyard that tends to show a little more muscle than Volnay’s famously delicate reputation might suggest.
Situated on the lower slopes of Volnay, Champans has a generous layer of clay over limestone, giving Pinot Noir the opportunity to develop real substance. The 2024 comes from a challenging growing season that demanded patience and careful selection in the vineyard. Rather than chasing concentration, the appeal here is in the wine’s balance and definition, with the domaine’s restrained approach allowing the personality of Champans to emerge.
Red cherry, raspberry and wild strawberry meet violet, subtle spice and a touch of woodland earthiness. There’s a lovely combination of silky fruit and finely grained tannins, with fresh acidity bringing lift to the palate and a savory note lingering through the finish. More structured than many Volnays, but still wonderfully graceful, this is a wine that should reward patience in the cellar. Beautiful with duck breast, roast guinea fowl, wild mushrooms or a classic boeuf bourguignon.
