Grapes: Cabernet Sauvignon with small portions of Petit Verdot, Merlot, and Sangiovese
“Philip” is Mazzei’s tribute to their ancestor, Philip Mazzei — philosopher, patriot, and friend of Thomas Jefferson — and like its namesake, the wine bridges the Old World and the New. It’s a distinctly Tuscan take on Cabernet: ripe, polished, and structured, with an unmistakable sense of place.
Fermented in stainless steel for clarity, then aged in French oak (a portion new) for depth and texture, the wine strikes a fine balance between power and refinement. Aromas of blackberry, blackcurrant, and violet mingle with cedar, spice, and a touch of tobacco leaf. The palate is full and generous, showing dark fruit, graphite, and savory herbs over a frame of supple tannins and bright acidity. The finish is long, clean, and quietly composed.
