Brothers Raphaël and Vincent Bérêche have made their family domaine in Ludes one of Champagne's most exciting addresses, earning a devoted following for wines that put individual vineyards firmly in the spotlight. While Pinot Noir and Meunier play important roles in their range, Les Beaux Regards gives Chardonnay the chance to shine. It's a fascinating expression of the Montagne de Reims, a region more commonly associated with Champagne's red grapes.
The 2022 comes from a small parcel in Ludes, where Chardonnay grows on chalky soils. The brothers favour a traditional, hands-on approach, with fermentation in oak and extended ageing allowing the wine to develop depth and character. The warmth of the 2022 growing season brings a little extra generosity, while the vineyard's natural freshness keeps everything beautifully composed.
Ripe lemon, golden apple and white peach open into toasted almond, delicate florals and a little freshly baked brioche. There's a lovely richness through the middle, but also a fine, chalky tension that gives the wine energy and carries it into a long, savoury finish. This is Chardonnay with real personality; generous enough to enjoy now, but with the structure to reward a little patience. Wonderful with scallops, lobster, roast turbot or chicken with morels.
