Grapes: 100% Sauvignon Blanc
The Comte Lafond family has been making wine in the Loire Valley for generations, but it's Baron Patrick de Ladoucette who helped establish Pouilly-Fumé as a destination for truly serious Sauvignon Blanc. His family's Château du Nozet is one of the region's most recognisable estates, and Baron de L is its flagship wine. Produced only in selected vintages, it's a rather grand expression of a grape more often associated with simple, refreshing whites.
The 2022 comes from some of the estate's finest old-vine parcels, with careful selection and extended time on the lees giving the wine impressive depth. Rather than relying on oak for richness, the focus is on bringing out the natural complexity of Sauvignon Blanc, allowing the limestone and flint-influenced soils of Pouilly-Fumé to make their mark.
Ripe citrus, white peach and pear open into delicate florals, a little fresh herb and that distinctive smoky, mineral note that gives Pouilly-Fumé its name. There's real substance through the middle, balanced by lively acidity and a long, beautifully focused finish. A Sauvignon Blanc with serious ageing potential, and one that deserves a little more attention than your average aperitif. Wonderful with oysters, scallops, grilled turbot or a classic goat's cheese.
