Domaine Moreau-Naudet is one of those producers that reminds us why Chablis can be so much more than a crisp glass of Chardonnay. The late Stéphane Moreau built the domaine's reputation on wines with remarkable depth and individuality, a philosophy his wife Virginie continues today. Montée de Tonnerre is among the most prestigious vineyards in their collection, producing some of the domaine's most compelling and age-worthy wines.
Situated just across the valley from the Grand Crus, Montée de Tonnerre has long been considered one of Chablis' finest Premier Cru sites. The 2024 comes from a challenging growing season that rewarded careful vineyard work, while the domaine's patient approach to élevage allows the Chardonnay to develop texture without losing its natural energy. There's a wonderful combination of substance and precision here, with the vineyard's limestone-rich soils lending a distinctive sense of place.
Ripe lemon, pear and green apple meet white flowers, toasted almond and a subtle hint of spice. The palate has impressive depth, but it's the bright acidity and almost chalky tension that really make this wine sing. The finish is long, savoury and beautifully focused, suggesting a Chardonnay that will only become more interesting with time. A serious Chablis for scallops, lobster, roast turbot or a particularly good roast chicken.
