Kistler has been one of the defining names in California Chardonnay for decades, but these aren’t wines built around a single formula. The estate works with its own heritage selection of Chardonnay across a collection of Sonoma vineyards, allowing each site to bring something different to the glass. It’s a distinctly Californian interpretation of the idea that great Chardonnay begins with where it’s grown.
The 2023 Sonoma Mountain draws on mountain-grown fruit and Kistler’s long-established approach to Chardonnay: giving the wine the time and structure it needs without losing the character of the vineyard. The result sits comfortably between old-school California richness and the fresher, more precise style that has increasingly defined Kistler under Jason Kesner.
Ripe pear, golden apple and lemon are joined by a little peach, toasted hazelnut and subtle spice. There’s a generous, silky texture, but enough acidity and mineral character to keep the wine feeling energetic rather than heavy. Rich, polished and built for the table — give it a little air and pour it with lobster, roast chicken, grilled halibut or something involving plenty of butter.
