Grapes: Sangiovese with a touch of Colorino and Canaiolo
Montevertine is Tuscan red wine stripped back to its essentials. Decades ago, the estate chose principle over paperwork, stepping outside the Chianti Classico rules rather than compromise its belief in Sangiovese as the heart of the region. That decision still defines the wine today. Labeled simply as Rosso di Toscana, Montevertine is often (and incorrectly) grouped with the so-called “Super Tuscans.” In reality, it stands in deliberate contrast to them.
Montevertine’s 2022 embodies the estate’s philosophy: wine that feels rooted in vineyard and vintage, with firm structure and gracious poise. This is Sangiovese that speaks first of place — warm hillside sun tempered by cool breezes — giving fruit that’s both ripe and clearly delineated.
Fermented and aged with restraint, the wine reveals aromatics of wild cherry, red plum, and dried herbs, underscored by a hint of earth and spice. On the palate it is focused yet generous: bright red fruit and bitter cherry layered with fine tannins and fresh acidity. A trace of savory undertone and mineral thread carries through to a finish that feels poised and complete rather than forceful.
