Grapes: Grasparossa
Forget everything you thought you knew about Lambrusco! In the hills around Castelvetro, just south of Modena, this wonderfully Italian sparkling red has a rather different personality from the sweet, simple bottles that once dominated American shelves. Zanasi celebrates the region's local Grasparossa grape, producing a wine that's all about generous fruit, lively bubbles and the simple pleasure of sharing a good bottle with friends.
Lambrusco Grasparossa is naturally darker and more structured than many of its Lambrusco cousins, with a little tannin giving the wine extra character. The bubbles bring freshness to all that fruit, creating a red that's equally happy accompanying a meal or kicking off an evening. It's a style that's been enjoyed around Emilia-Romagna for generations, and with good reason.
Juicy blackberry, black cherry and ripe plum meet violet and a little savoury spice. There's plenty of fruit, but the lively fizz and gentle tannins keep everything refreshing rather than heavy. Serve it lightly chilled and bring on the prosciutto, Parmigiano Reggiano, pizza or a generous plate of pasta Bolognese. Frankly, it's hard to imagine a more cheerful wine for the dinner table.
