Domaine du Clos du Fief is a family affair in Juliénas, where Michel Tête and his son Sylvain have built a reputation for making wonderfully honest, characterful Beaujolais. While their home village is known for some of the region's more structured reds, their Beaujolais-Villages shows a lighter, more playful side of Gamay. Exactly the sort of wine that reminds us why we love this corner of France.
The 2024 comes from vineyards in the northern Beaujolais, where granite-rich soils and a cooler growing season give the wine plenty of freshness. Traditional Beaujolais winemaking keeps the emphasis on bright fruit and easy drinkability rather than heavy extraction or oak. The result is a red with enough character for the dinner table, but absolutely no need for a special occasion.
Juicy raspberry, red cherry and wild strawberry meet a little violet and gentle spice. There's a lovely freshness to the palate, with soft tannins and a clean, lively finish that practically invites another glass. Give it a slight chill and serve with charcuterie, roast chicken, grilled sausages or a big plate of frites. A fabulous everyday red that punches well above its weight.
