Grapes: 100% Pinot Meunier
Brothers Raphaël and Vincent Bérêche have made their family domaine one of the most compelling names in grower Champagne, with a reputation for wines that are as individual as the vineyards they come from. Based in Ludes, the brothers have a particular talent for finding complexity in unexpected places. Rive Gauche takes us to the left bank of the Marne, where Pinot Meunier gets the opportunity to show just how serious it can be.
The 2022 comes from vineyards around Mareuil-le-Port, where Meunier finds a particularly expressive home. It's a generous vintage, bringing plenty of natural richness to a grape already known for its inviting fruit and supple texture. Bérêche's thoughtful use of oak adds depth without overwhelming the wine, while a restrained dosage keeps everything fresh and beautifully balanced.
Ripe pear, golden apple and wild strawberry meet toasted almond, a little brioche and gentle spice. There's a lovely breadth to the palate, with fine bubbles and a savoury edge that prevents the richness from becoming heavy. The finish is long, dry and wonderfully satisfying. A brilliant example of why Meunier deserves more attention, and a Champagne that's equally at home with roast chicken, mushrooms, charcuterie or a plate of aged Comté.
