Corsica is one of France's most fascinating wine regions, where Italian influences, rugged mountain landscapes and a distinctly Mediterranean personality come together in the glass. Domaine Vico, established in 1901, is one of the island's historic estates, now enjoying a new chapter under the direction of Jean-Charles Abbatucci and his team. Their wines are a wonderful introduction to Corsica's indigenous grapes, and Forca di Pero is no exception.
From vineyards in central Corsica, this red brings together two of the island's signature varieties: Niellucciu, a close relative of Sangiovese, and the wonderfully aromatic Sciaccarellu. The estate's organic and biodynamic farming puts the emphasis on healthy vineyards and expressive fruit, creating wines that capture the island's distinctive character without unnecessary fuss.
Wild cherry, raspberry and ripe plum meet Mediterranean herbs, cracked pepper and a little earthy spice. There's a lovely combination of juicy fruit and savoury complexity, with fine tannins and refreshing acidity keeping everything lively. Give it a little air and serve with grilled lamb, roast pork, charcuterie or anything involving rosemary and garlic. A fabulous alternative for anyone who loves the reds of Tuscany or the Southern Rhône.
