Hundred Acre is the singular vision of Jayson Woodbridge, whose relentless pursuit of exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon has made his Napa Valley estate one of California's most coveted producers. Every aspect of production is approached with extraordinary attention to detail, from vineyard management to barrel selection. The resulting wines are powerful, distinctive and produced in remarkably small quantities. But even within the Hundred Acre portfolio, Dark Ark occupies a particularly special place.
First produced in 2015, Dark Ark is an extremely limited selection from the estate's celebrated Ark Vineyard, situated on the slopes of Glass Mountain near St. Helena. Rather than being a separate vineyard, it represents a more concentrated interpretation of Ark itself. For the 2022 release, Woodbridge selected exceptional barrels from nine distinct vineyard blocks, isolating the most intense and structured components that might otherwise overwhelm the balance of the regular Ark bottling. The wine spent 32 months in 100% new French oak, resulting in an extraordinarily concentrated expression of this remarkable site.
Blackcurrant, dark plum and black cherry dominate, followed by layers of espresso, tobacco, exotic spice and a distinctive stony minerality. The palate is immense, yet remarkably polished, with deeply concentrated fruit, plush tannins and an underlying tension that keeps the richness beautifully controlled. The finish is exceptionally persistent, revealing further savoury and mineral complexity. A monumental Napa Cabernet, produced in minute quantities and built for decades of ageing. One for the serious collector!
