Destilerías Acha has been making spirits and aperitifs in Spain's Basque Country since 1831, making it one of the country's oldest family-owned distilleries. Based in the small town of Amurrio, the family has spent generations perfecting traditional recipes, including a rather fabulous range of vermouths. Their Rojo is a delicious reminder of why the Spanish take their aperitif hour so seriously!
Made from a wine base infused with aromatic herbs, spices and botanicals, this is a classic Spanish red vermouth, balancing gentle sweetness with a pleasantly bitter edge. Made in a lighter style than other European red vermouths, the iconic Acha herbal notes are balanced with bright, fresh fruit, including sour cherry jam, plum skin, and dried Mission figs.
Orange peel, cinnamon and warm spice meet dried herbs, a little caramel and a touch of bitter chocolate. There's a lovely richness to the palate, followed by a gently bitter, refreshing finish that makes another sip almost inevitable. Serve the Spanish way: over plenty of ice, with a slice of orange and perhaps an olive or two. Add some good olives, almonds and jamón, and you've got yourself a rather perfect aperitivo.
