Grapes: 100% Friulano
In the rolling hills of Collio, just a stone's throw from the Slovenian border, Franco Toros has spent decades making some of Friuli's most characterful white wines. His family estate is a wonderful example of why this corner of northeastern Italy deserves more attention, particularly for its indigenous grapes. Friulano is the local star, and Toros makes a compelling case for why it belongs on the table alongside Italy's more famous whites.
The 2020 comes from the mineral-rich hillside vineyards of Collio, where the region's distinctive layers of sandstone and marl give the wines their character. Toros favours a traditional approach, allowing the Friulano to develop texture and depth without losing the freshness that makes the variety so appealing. A few years of bottle age have given this vintage an extra dimension of complexity.
Ripe pear, yellow apple and white peach meet almond, delicate wild herbs and a little savoury spice. There's a lovely rounded quality to the palate, balanced by gentle acidity and a subtle mineral note that carries through the finish. More textured than Pinot Grigio, but every bit as versatile, this is a fabulous white for prosciutto, grilled fish, roast chicken or a plate of creamy risotto.
